New innovations from an historic site

Rapid growth in drug development, protein discovery, and bioinformatics dictated the need for additional office and research space for ZymoGenetics. Set across the street from its former location at the historic Lake Union Steam Plant, this building successfully integrates old and new.

Large, vertical windows introduce light and views. The building's massing recalls the imagery of the turbine. Simple materials including brick, concrete, and corrugated metal create visual interest and scale. The new building, together with the existing facility, creates a gateway into the city. The complex, including below-grade parking, offices, state-of-the-art research laboratories, and safety assessment facilities, was designed and constructed in 16 months, with provisions for expansion.
