Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center
Master Site and Facilities Plan
A roadmap for future development
Nationally recognized Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (WFBMC) is an academic medical center with an integrated enterprise including educational and research facilities, hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centers, and other primary and specialty care facilities serving 24 counties in northwest North Carolina and southwest Virginia. Its divisions consist of Wake Forest Baptist Health (a regional clinical system), Wake Forest School of Medicine, and Wake Forest Innovations, which promotes the commercialization of research discoveries and operates Wake Forest Innovation Quarter, an urban research and business park specializing in biotechnology, materials science, and information technology.
This multi-campus master plan, encompassing nearly 10 million square feet of space, will guide the development of WFBMC for immediate decisions as well as create a road map for future development over a 5-, 10-, and 15-year time horizon. It includes a detailed activity and space assessment of the clinical enterprise on the Winston campus of all inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and support programs and spaces, as well as a system-wide assessment of both perioperative capacity and ambulatory capacity across all 12 off-campus locations. The comprehensive plan provides a targeted assessment of the research enterprise and facilities on the Winston campus and Innovation Quarter, confirms overall growth assumptions for educational spaces, determines future growth needs and zone, and shows site acquisition, development phasing strategies, and overall campus identity plans for the next 20 years.
