Expedition Staging Building (ESB)

Launching a platform for research

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) uses cutting-edge engineering technology to support biological, chemical, and physical science research in deep-water ocean environments.

The 6,000-square-foot Expedition Staging Building (ESB) is a marine science and environmental research facility used to prepare mobile data gathering platforms and instrumentation in shipping containers for deployment on research vessels. The instrumentation is used by MBARI's researchers to gather samples, data, and images from underwater research submersible gathering probes – both on their own vessels as well as in collaboration with other institutions worldwide.

The facility's design reflects MBARI's commitment to respecting the natural environment and the site's historical context.
