Addressing veterinary medicine demand
Supporting South Carolina's growing need for veterinary medicine services, Clemson University's new College of Veterinary Medicine reinforces Clemson's identity while creating a new image for the college. Flad is leading overall design of the project as well as planning and design of all laboratory and office research spaces in collaboration with architect of record LS3P and veterinary medicine planner Foil Wyatt.
The 245,000-square-foot complex will be the first college of veterinary medicine in the state of South Carolina and will address the statewide shortage of veterinarians. Nearly half of the counties in South Carolina have fewer than 10 veterinarians.
Located near the university's main campus, the college is comprised of six buildings including The Hub, a vibrant center where students can attend classes, study, and engage with each other. In addition, it will include a clinical teaching building, research building, ambulatory service building, equine teaching building, and farm animal teaching building.
Veterinary medicine teaching spaces, food animal teaching, field service ambulatory, and general education spaces are cohesive across campus through purposeful siting and connections with the existing equine center, dairy, and other agricultural facilities. Laboratories, classrooms, and seminar spaces are highly flexible to accommodate current models of discovery and learning while remaining adaptable for evolving future needs.
The new academic program takes a hands-on approach for students – on-site lecture- and laboratory-based instruction will be augmented with visits to off-site animal research stations. In their final year, students will visit partner institutions for clinical learning throughout the state. The new College of Veterinary Medicine continues Clemson's goal of meeting community needs and retaining top talent while supporting veterinary research that focuses on public health.
