Torrey Heights by Breakthrough Properties has been awarded the Excellence in Structural Engineering Award in the New Construction Category by the Structural Engineering Association of San Diego (SEAOSD).
Flad designed the 10-acre campus, working with engineering consultant Coffman Engineers. Located in the heart of San Diego's research community, Torrey Heights integrates nature and technology to create an inspiring workplace. With three scientific workplace buildings and an amenities building, Torrey Heights offers 515,000 square feet of state-of-the-art laboratory and office space.
Flad employed digital tools to assist in massing, placement, and façade development to create flexible, daylight-infused interior floor plates that maximize energy efficiency. Meanwhile, the exterior design echoes the area's layered geologic formations in its coffered façade. The steeply graded window panels establish a dynamic, tessellated signature envelope.
