SJSU Interdisciplinary Science Building Achieves LEED Gold Certification
San Jose State University's new Interdisciplinary Science Building (ISB) has achieved LEEDv4 BD+C Gold certification. Flad designed the eight-story building, which opened in 2023 and represents the first phase of a new science precinct for SJSU.
The 157,000-square-foot ISB houses teaching and research labs for chemistry and biology, an interdisciplinary Center for High Performance Computing, and a data and science information lab serving the College of Professional and Global Education.
The project's close proximity to the San Jose urban core provides students, faculty, and staff with nearby public transit options and walkable access to basic services. In addition, the building's cool roof and light-colored paving materials on site, along with landscaping featuring native California plants and tree shading, provides a more comfortable environment for pedestrians enjoying the site.
Utilizing recycled water for non-potable water needs, such as fixture flushing, the ISB has an exceptional 89% potable water use reduction. By targeting products that have transparency documentation, the Flad project team was able to select construction materials proven to have a better impact on both the climate and building occupant health.
The building is designed to achieve an estimated 32% energy use reduction compared to a code baseline building.
