SMH-Venice Wins International Honor with IFI Design Distinction Silver Award
Flad-designed Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice has earned its second international honor as it was named a 2024 International Federation of Interior (IFI) Architects/Designers Design Distinction Awards (DDA) Silver Winner in the Health category. The IFI DDA are presented every two years to recognize excellence in designed outcomes of built projects from across the world. Winners were selected by a 10-person, independent, international jury of recognized world design leaders and experts.
Flad master planned and designed the new, greenfield hospital campus, which opened in late 2021, bringing top-ranked medical and emergency services to the rapidly growing population just south of Sarasota. Every detail of the hospital was designed to create a welcoming and comfortable experience for patients, visitors, and staff. Durable, natural materials; thoughtful use of local artwork; and custom, large-format wall coverings create a cohesive, unique atmosphere on all hospital levels.
From the gracious and inviting double-height lobby, visitors and families are directed to registration, imaging, and surgical services, with contemporary food and nutrition amenities within view. Check-in desks, waiting areas, and vertical circulation points are sprinkled along the primary interior path with serpentine-like lighting coves flowing from the lobby to various departments, creating pleasant layers of light and reinforcing intuitive navigation.
