Resilience of Unique Flad-designed Hospital Featured in Health Facilities Management
The new Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center was recently featured in Health Facilities Management magazine. A symbol of strength and resilience, the new hospital and medical center will replace the only permanent hospital on the island of St. Croix after it was critically damaged by hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.
Resilience and flexibility are guiding principles for the 482,000-square-foot facility. The medical facility is more than a place where residents seek healthcare. It is also a center of civic and social gathering that represents the community and its history. Due to the unique island environment, the hospital must be designed and engineered to withstand earthquakes, hurricanes, and tsunami events and remain operational during and after natural disaster events.
Flad has worked closely with local government, hospital leadership, and care providers to ensure the new, future-focused replacement hospital will be a technically innovative, resilient community center that serves as a beacon of stability, permanence, and hope in times of crisis to the residents of the USVI and the island of St. Croix.
