Flad's Henry Kosarzycki Co-leading Two Sessions at PDC Summit
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Principles in Healthcare Security Design
Sunday, March 09, 20258:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Eastern
Atlanta, Georgia
Learn how collaboration between security leaders and project design teams in the planning, design, and construction process can help healthcare leaders reduce costs and crime while creating a safer environment for patients, visitors, and healthcare staff.
At the PDC Summit, Flad Code Architect Henry Kosarzycki will be joined by International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) President-Elect Dan Yaross and Mike Lauer of BJC Health System. They will lead an interactive workshop focusing on the principles of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) when building or remodeling healthcare facilities. The discussion will focus on security strategies for the designed environment through a multifaceted approach of natural surveillance, access control, target reinforcement, maintenance, security operations, and territorial reinforcement.
The process of using CPTED principles in healthcare design begins with a security risk assessment. This should include patient populations, logistics, and community crime assessments to develop a layered approach to security design that is reasonable, appropriate, and defensible from a risk and regulatory perspective.
Learning Outcomes:
- Outline the principles of CPTED.
- Explain the importance of a security risk assessment in laying the groundwork for a comprehensive security design strategy.
- Detail design principles project teams can implement to increase security, reduce risk, and prevent violence.
- Explore how CPTED principles can align and integrate with current and future codes.
Embracing Interdependence – Unraveling the Complicated Application of Health Care Facility Regulations
Sunday, March 09, 20251:00 – 3:00 p.m. Eastern
Atlanta, Georgia
Sorting through healthcare facility regulations can be complex, but their core purpose is clear: improving safety and care. In a pre-conference session at the PDC Summit, Flad Code Architect Henry Kosarzycki will be joined by fellow regulations experts to co-lead an overview of healthcare facilities regulations, codes, and standards and their applications.
The session is presented in partnership with the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) and the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH) Codes and Standards Committee. Speakers will explore how these regulations, codes, and standards apply to different facilities and business models from initial design through occupancy, performance, and compliance.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss how regulations, codes, and standards specific to healthcare design interdependently apply for each type of facility/business model.
- Explore different design opportunities in the healthcare environment and how the applicable codes will affect that design.
- Gain insights on where and why specific regulations are applied, from design to construction to survey.
- Discover some of the most commonly misunderstood code requirements in healthcare facilities.
- Engage with some of the major differences between healthcare regulations, codes, and standards and potential solutions for compliance.
About the PDC Summit >
The International Summit & Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design & Construction brings together thousands of stakeholders
from all disciplines of healthcare planning, design, and construction to advance the built environment of healthcare. It is the only
event that unites this many healthcare constructors, facilities staff, owners, and clinicians with designers and architects.
