The North Carolina State University Plant Sciences Building was recently featured on the cover of the Architectural Woodwork Institute's (AWI) Design Solutions magazine. Design Solutions is the official journal of the AWI, dedicated to showcasing beautiful examples of fine architectural woodwork.
Flad designed the Plant Sciences Building, which is home to the North Carolina Plant Sciences Institute, an interdisciplinary research program whose mission is to improve the world through innovation and address agriculture's grand challenges. Stephenson Millwork fabricated architectural woodwork for the project.
Inspired by the history of barns across North Carolina, the award-winning interior design features vertical wood slats throughout the building, integrated with wood paneling in the lobby and gathering spaces. Coupled with a terracotta rainscreen wall system and extensive exterior glazing, which provides abundant natural light, the design highlights agriculture's connection between nature and cutting-edge innovation.
