ENR Honors NBAF as Midwest Project of the Year, Best Government/Public Building Project
The National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) has been named both Midwest Project of the Year and Best Project in the Government/Public Building category by Engineering News Record.
Designed and built in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the new 715,000-square-foot facility provides modern, safe, and secure biocontainment laboratories for licensing animal vaccines; defending against high-consequence diseases in livestock; and providing the essential infrastructure for threat characterization, forensics, and detection.
Located adjacent to Kansas State University, NBAF includes a 574,000-square-foot laboratory building, which features BSL-2 and -3 enhanced spaces as well as ABSL-3Ag and ABSL-4Ag spaces. It is the nation’s first large-scale federal biocontainment facility to achieve LEED Gold certification.
