Disaster Recovery and Future Planning for the Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital in the U.S. Virgin Islands

Healthcare Facilities Symposium and Expo (HFSE) Session

Tuesday, September 24, 2024
3:00-4:00 pm (Central)

Austin, Texas

In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017, the Governor Juan F. Luis (JFL) Hospital in St. Croix, USVI faced multiple challenges. After addressing immediate repairs and working to build a temporary hospital to serve patients, hospital leaders engaged Flad to design a replacement hospital.

At HFSE, Darryl Smalls of the Virgin Islands Government Hospitals and Health Facilities Corporation will lead a presentation along with Flad's Steve Jackson and Neal Boothe from TLC Engineering Solutions. They will discuss the challenges and lessons learned from designing a hospital on a remote island in an area subject to natural disasters.

The new facility is designed with a focus on resilience and system redundancies to safeguard against future natural disasters. The hospital serves as the main healthcare provider for St. Croix and the larger territory and is estimated to be completed in late 2029.
