Designed by Flad, the Argonne National Laboratory Materials Design Laboratory (MDL) has received a 2022 Design Excellence Award by Lab Manager. This prestigious program recognizes and celebrates the best lab design projects across the nation. Judged by a panel of industry leaders consisting of laboratory architects, engineers, construction professions, and editorial staff from Lab Manager, each nominated project is meticulously analyzed and scrutinized against the best of the best.
Receiving an Honorable Mention in the safety category, the Argonne National Laboratory MDL is a state-of-the-art collaborative research facility for energy and material scientists to investigate structures at the scale of a single electron and larger. Home to approximately 100 researchers, the facility supports scientific theory/simulation, in-situ material discovery, characterization, and application of new energy-related materials and processes that transform the nation's energy grid – all with a unique set of safety standards due to the sensitive nature of its research and the novel materials that are being investigated, including heavy elements.
