Situational Ethics of Design & Construction in the Collegiate Setting

Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) Facilities, Public Safety, and Sustainability Conference

San Francisco, California

We assume the way we organize ourselves to design and build campuses reflects a system of thinking that resolves diverging motivations among stakeholders and constitutes best practices. Yet as with any human system, much of the current state consists of legacy thinking that is worth reassessing.

At the AJCU Facilities, Public Safety, and Sustainability Conference, Flad Principal Ben de Rubertis will lead a breakout session, titled I Never Said That: Situational Ethics of Design & Construction in the Collegiate Setting. The session will examine role-specific concepts of team as well as the role of unwritten norms in shaping project delivery.

Participants will be invited to identify pain points that derive from faulty assumptions and magical thinking. In addition, the presentation will consider how processes can adapt and explore what happens when the older notions of procurement collide with newer ideas about design thinking, culture, and placemaking.
